Wed, 24 Dec 2008 21:05:00 -0800 cordovan red aniline dye mix applied http://parent.posterous.com/cordovan-red-aninine-dye-mix-a http://parent.posterous.com/cordovan-red-aninine-dye-mix-a

you can see what it will look like now. This is the dye in the wet stage, and is what it should look like after the lacquer is on.  I have to agree with the posts Iv'e read that say once you use aniline dyes you won't want to go back to stains. The dyes leave so much of the grain in tact and ready to pop out.

Sun, 21 Dec 2008 14:43:18 -0800 yellow aniline dye applied http://parent.posterous.com/yellow-aniline-dye-applied http://parent.posterous.com/yellow-aniline-dye-applied I bleached the mahogany to lighten it. First I'll apply the yellow aniline, then a red transtint-shellac mixture. If all goes well it wont be to dark in the end.

Tue, 18 Nov 2008 10:41:00 -0800 The beginnings of a new desk http://parent.posterous.com/the-beginnings-of-a-new-desk http://parent.posterous.com/the-beginnings-of-a-new-desk

I've been looking for a desk solution for the new office. I want allot of desk top space, something like 72ish inches of space. The problem is that executive desks are bulky and also very expensive for anything not cookie cutter or press board, fall apart junk. The solution is reclaiming pedestals from this 100.00 mahogany desk built in 74, dovetailed, solids with 1'ply veniers, from Europe with marble inlay. Good bones

Let me emphasize how important it is to clamp this up right. A jig should be made in advance that is true, and flat. Using something metal would be best especially if the door frame is finished and painted prohibiting tweeking the jams as needed if core warps in glue up---which it will if not clamped perfectly flat on both sides and legth and width.

I put a custom blend cherry/walnut stain and some satin varnish on the top. Looks good but i'm not sure if satin varnish will hold up to the punishment. A couple upper cabinets for storage and it will be done. maybe a printer stand and definatley tidey up those cords.

I really just needed a place to close off all the destraction and focus on Bible Study and a Web Design hobby. I also like to repair computers and like having a dedicated workspace is a realized luxury now. I think I know just the spot in this office for a fold up table. And some tools.
